How Do Electronic Air Cleaners Work?

As we mentioned above, there are two types of electronic air purifiers you can use in your home: an electronic precipitator or ion generator. Both types of electronic air cleaners use electricity to capture contaminants in your home, but each does so in a different way:

  • Electrostatic precipitators: Electrostatic precipitators work by drawing particles into them with a fan. The components are housed in a small metal cabinet, and once the draw–in particles are inside the cabinet, they enter an ionization section where they are negatively charged. As the particles continue through the chamber, they are captured by oppositely charged metal collection plates. It is important to clean these plates every three months so that the precipitator continues to work effectively.
  • Ion generators:Ion generators also charge particles, but they do so by dispersing negative ions into the air, not by drawing particles and contaminants to it. Another difference ion generators have from electrostatic precipitators is that there are no collection plates upon which the contaminants are collected. Instead, the dispersed negative ions attach themselves to the particles and contaminants in your air, and these newly charged particles are attracted to the surfaces in your home. The particles are then removed when the surfaces are cleaned.
