Two Types of Tankless Water Heaters
Not only do you have a choice of fuels when it comes to installing and using a tankless water heater, you also have a choice of type: point–of–use or a whole–home. What’s the difference? Let’s take a look:
Point–of–use systems install directly under a water outlet such as a sink or bath tub. Their use is specific to that one location, providing its own dedicated tankless unit. As you can imagine, these units are quite small, and they use electricity to operate. Hot water is provided when you open a hot water tap: flow sensors cue the electricity to heat the coils inside the unit and the cold water passes over the coils and absorbs the heat. The hot water then flows out of your tap. It takes about two seconds for the hot water to flow from your faucet when using this type of tankless system.
A whole–home tankless unit provides hot water for your entire house on–demand. When a hot water faucet is opened, the heat exchanger in the tankless unit turns on; at the same time, the cold water valve attached to the unit allows the cold water to flow into the heat exchanger, where it absorbs the heat. Once the water reaches the right temperature, which is in a matter of seconds, it flows up and out of your hot water tap.
Which type is best for you? This is an important question to review with one of our experts, who can help you determine which type of tankless system is best for you.
